  • Far-right commentator Katie Hopkins has been dumped from Channel 7’s Big Brother VIP a day after boasting about flouting infection controls while in hotel quarantine in Sydney.

Ms Hopkins told her 261,000 Instagram followers she had opened her door to guards naked and not wearing a mask to “call out” Australia’s quarantine system and lockdowns.

“What I want is the sergeant in the foyer to come up and tell me off so that I can stand there naked while he tells me off,” she said.

She said it was her way of “calling out” lockdowns, which she described as being the “greatest hoax in human history”.

The staffer underwent the 14-day pre-departure test and received a negative result. A second test in Cairns returned an inconclusive result, triggering two more tests.

“It has also been confirmed that while in Melbourne the staff member had not been to any identified exposure sites and had followed all appropriate procedures,” an AOC spokesman said.

Nationals Senator Matthew Canavan is cheering on lockdown protestors in Sydney following the shut down of non-critical workplaces including construction sites by the NSW Government.

Senator Canavan on Sunday tweeted in support of a protest of truck drivers stopping on Sydney Harbour and Anzac Bridges.

The NSW Government introduced tougher lockdowns over the past few days to stop the spread of the highly transmissible Delta variant of coronavirus.

“I support these truckies ... end the lockdowns,” Senator Canavan said in the tweet, which was re-tweeted by former Senator David Leyonhjelm.

The Transport Workers Union responded by saying that if he supported truckies he should help ensure their businesses were supported, they had access to paid pandemic leave and there were more testing hubs to reduce queues.

Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce was asked to comment on Mr Canavan’s previous comments arguing against lockdown restrictions on ABC’s Insiders on Sunday.

Mr Joyce did not address Mr Canavan’s claims but endorsed lockdowns.

“Suppression is the way to go,” Mr Joyce said.

“Right now we’ve got to make sure that we keep the virus suppressed and that’s what is happening, because we’ve got to make sure that we keep people alive.”

Mr Joyce apologised for his comments last month, where he said contrasted regional Australia’s lack of coronavirus restrictions and said of Melbourne “you can almost smell the burning flesh from here”.

It was once one of the world’s most treacherous COVID-19 hotspots, but Seattle is now a city in stark contrast to Australia’s locked-down capitals and the Australians living there are gutted at the difference between their lives and those of their compatriots back home.

“It’s a crazy turnaround,” said Daniella Phair, 32, a Melbourne lawyer who’s working in Seattle for Amazon. “Here, you basically wouldn’t know that coronavirus had ever happened. I think we’re now the most vaccinated metro city in the country, all restrictions were lifted on June 30, we don’t have to wear masks anywhere and all the restaurants are back to full capacity.

“But it’s unbelievable to me what’s happening in Australia. It’s ridiculous to be in this situation with lockdowns and borders closed after so long. It feels like the rest of the world are leaving you behind.”

Seven Network has said that English media personality Katie Hopkins will not be on Big Brother VIP.

Ms Hopkins told her Instagram followers on Saturday in posts, now removed, that she was taunting guards at her hotel quarantine by answers the door undressed and without a mask.

“Seven and Endemol Shine Australia confirm that Katie Hopkins is not part of Big Brother VIP.

Seven and Endemol Shine strongly condemn her irresponsible and reckless comments in hotel quarantine,” a Seven spokesman said.

Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt wants English media personality Katie Hopkins sent back to the UK if it is found to be true that she deliberately flouted infection controls while in hotel quarantine in Sydney.

Mr Hunt said the actions as outlined in media reports were “dangerous, irresponsible and apparently deliberate” when questioned about her behaviour at a press conference on Sunday afternoon.

Ms Hopkins told her Instagram followers on Saturday, in now removed posts, that she had been trying to taunt guards at the hotel by answering the door undressed and without a mask.

“In my view if the facts are borne out of deliberately exposing someone to potential contact… then the strongest action should be taken,” Mr Hunt said.

Ms Hopkins is believed to be in quarantine to take part in Channel Seven’s upcoming Big Brother, alongside American celebrity Caitlyn Jenner.

“Instead of Big Brother watching Katie Hopkins, Katie Hopkins should be watching big brother from a long, long way away,” Mr Hunt said.

He said questions about the sponsorship of celebrities to come to Australia for television shows should be “posed to the media organisation involved”.

“I’ll leave that to the media organisation that sought the exemption,” he said, when asked whether celebrities should be allowed entry to the country when thousands of Australians are stuck abroad.

The celebrities’ arrival was given an exemption by NSW Health and are in addition to the existing caps on returning Australians.

NSW Police are due to give a compliance update shortly.
