At least 25 dead due to heavy rain and landslides in Mumbai
Twenty five people died in house collapses triggered by landslides following incessant overnight rains in Mumbai, which caused severe water logging and disruption of suburban train services and vehicular traffic in the financial capital on Sunday, officials said.
Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray also expressed grief and announced Rs five lakh compensation to the next of kin of those who lost their lives, said the Chief Ministerâs Office (CMO). He also announced that those who have been injured will be treated for free.
The suburban train services were suspended due to water logging on the tracks due to the overnight heavy downpour, railway officials said, adding the services were resumed in the morning.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai in the backdrop of heavy rains, a BMC official said. Alerts by the IMD are colour-coded from green to red. A âgreenâ alert stands for âno warningâ: no action needs to be taken by the authorities, and the forecast is of light to moderate rain. A âredâ alert stands for âwarningâ, and asks authorities to âtake actionâ. An orangeâ alert indicates that the authorities are expected to be prepared.
Mumbai recorded 176.96 mm rain between 8 pm and 8 am, officials said, adding that the eastern suburbs recorded 204.07 mm and the western 195.48 mm, respectively. The downpour caused heavy flooding in low lying areas of Chunabhatti, Sion, Dadar, and Gandhi Market, Chembur and Kurla LBS Road. Mumbai will continue to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next five days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
